Abby's Quality of Life and Joanie Baloney's Ruptured Disc

Success Stories

as told by their human, Patricia Bentley

Bentley1We first met Dr. Jeff at Healing Paws when our 12 1/2 year old Dachshund, Abby, had trouble walking and standing. After having x-rays and tests, we found out that Abby's vertebrae in her back had fused together and she had arthritis. Our Abby was very uncomfortable. The vet told us to give Dr. Jeff a call and see if we could get her some physical therapy.  Abby was soon feeling better and able to move around easily once again. The winter months were often the hardest on Abby, but we were able to keep her in good health for the next 3 years!  We lost Abby when she was 15 1/2 years old! She spent the last years of her life comfortable and able to move about and enjoy her life. Our time at Healing Paws gave Abby a quality of life that I wouldn't trade for anything.

Recently, our 4 1/2 year old Dachshund, Joanie Baloney, had an accident with her house mate; while playing with their favorite purple ball, the dogs ran head first into one another! Joanie was visibly dazed and we knew we were in trouble. Over the next 2 weeks Joanie's back legs began to fail. After several visits to the vet, we were told that Joanie needed surgery. In fact, we were told that if we waited, Joanie would be in danger of permanent damage to her spine and the possibility of not being able to walk properly.

Bentley3Joanie had surgery in September of 2010. Joanie had ruptured a disk and it was pressing up against her spinal cord. When we picked her up from surgery, we were told that once her stitches came out we could just fill up the bathtub with water and let her swim for therapy! This was completely outrageous to us! What if something went wrong? We could do more damage to her spine.

We called Healing Paws and started Joanie on a plan that included several types of therapy (including laser therapy, the hydro treadmill and treatments we could do at home). Joanie is doing so well. We are very excited that she will totally recover. Every day she is more confident and sure on her feet. Joanie is a great dog and deserves to heal completely; we wouldn't have it any other way. The staff at Healing Paws is caring, knowledgeable and helpful.
